Celebrating International Women’s Day 2026 with DCU Age Friendly University

To mark International Women’s Day 8 March 2026 Spry Finance decided to shift the spotlight slightly and focus on a female cohort that do not get the attention that they deserve.

It is a large group, one that is growing every year and one that yet has not been recognised for the lived experience, the wisdom, the sheer depth of knowledge that its members can, and are, bringing to bear on women’s issues and society. We are talking, of course, about older women.

International Womens Day interview with Christine O’Kelly from DUC Age Friendly University

The Irish population is ageing. By 2030, around 20% of men and women will be over 60 years of age, and people across the board are living longer and living better. If things remain as they are, around 50% of those over 60s will be women who have seen a lot of change for the better in terms of equality and recognition of women’s rights, who have forged careers, raised families, made their own way and have expectations for their later lives.

For the last three years, Spry Finance has partnered with the Age Friendly University at DCU, an institution that caters specifically for the lifelong learning needs of the older generation — the ageing population that’s still full of life and curiosity and is looking for knowledge and mental stimulation to keep it mentally fit.

For IWD 2026 Ailish McGlew, Spry’s Head of Marketing and Communications, sat down with Christine O’Kelly from DCU Age Friendly University to celebrate older women and all they have to offer. How they can influence and drive change and how they are engaging with lifelong learning to keep themselves active and engaged in their longer, later lives.
