Going back to school at DCU’s Age Friendly University
Ireland’s leading champion of lifelong learning is Dublin City University (DCU), which holds the distinction of being designated the world’s first Age Friendly University (AFU). The DCU Age Friendly initiative is designed to make education accessible, welcoming, and relevant to older learners.
The AFU offers a variety of courses, lectures, and events tailored to different interests and skill levels – from history and literature to computer skills and personal development. Many are free or available at a reduced rate for those aged over 60, and there’s no pressure to commit to a full degree programme unless you want to.
Christine O’Kelly, Age-Friendly University Network Director at DCU, said: “Our Age-Friendly ethos is all about making the campus a place where older learners feel valued and supported. Whether you’ve been out of formal education for decades or have never stepped foot in a lecture hall, you’ll find a friendly, inclusive environment that puts your needs first.”
Great ways to learn at the AFU
DCU’s Love of Lifelong Learning programme offers a range of eight-week modules, many starting from just €90 to €160. They include:
- Creative Writing – Channel your stories, experiences, or imagination into words.
- Psychology – Delve into the workings of the mind and human behaviour.
- Art Appreciation – Enhance your enjoyment of visual culture.
- Painting Class – Express yourself through colours and canvas.
- Languages – Learn a new language at a relaxed pace, or grow your fluency in one you already know.
- Opera – Explore this majestic art form and its soaring stories.
- Genealogy – Trace your roots and family history
- History – Engaging lectures on places and era you want to learn about.
No qualifications are required to particpate in the Love of Lifelong Learning programme – just curiosity and a willingness to try new things. Getting started by browsing available courses on the DCU AFU website, or reach out to the Age Friendly team via email or phone for support with enrolment.
Some special modules are free to attend, as are special guest lectures, and research, cultural and social events during the year.
For those who want to immerse themselves in university life fully, DCU also offers audit modules from its undergraduate programmes, specially open to older learners with no entry requirements. Participants can sit in on lectures alongside degree students, receive a DCU student card and email address, and enjoy access to campus facilities – all without the pressure of exams or assignments. Each module runs for eight weeks, costs €125, and awards a Certificate of Participation on completion, making it a great way to experience academic learning in a relaxed, supportive setting.
