Shop Smart in the Winter Sales

When it comes to the winter sales, it can be difficult to stay focussed on the items you really want, let alone need

Bargains bombard you from every direction on e-mails, texts, social media and in store. It can be quite overwhelming. Of course you could just ignore it all and decide you’re not shopping. However, for those who appreciate a good mark down but want to avoid buyers remorse, here are five simple ‘rules’ or guidelines to help you stay on track.

Like any shopping expedition, it’s best to be prepared, particularly when faced with the biggest sale of the year. First things first, be clear on what you already own. Go through your wardrobe and take a mental note of what you have. The chances are, you’re already seeing double as we tend to be drawn to the familiar, particularly when it comes to colours, knitwear and jeans. So rule number one; decide before you shop, that you won’t buy any more of the same items.

Rule number two, think about the pieces you felt you were missing most from your Autumn wardrobe over the past few months. For example, you wished you had a good white shirt more than once, or there’s a jacket which you have been looking at all season but it was just beyond your budget. If you manage to bag these items, then you are actually saving money. If, on the other hand, you see 50% off an item from one of your favourite brands but it’s not your colour or a flattering shape, put it back! You are unlikely to ever wear it or match it with anything else you own. Ask yourself, if an item wasn’t a favourite designer, would you even look at it twice? Probably not. So rule number 3, a bargain, designer or not, still needs to work with your wardrobe, no matter how much it is reduced.

Perhaps you don’t identify with any of the usual pitfalls whilst shopping the sales, in which case, you’re stronger than most! So, with a clean slate, which items should you prioritise in a sale? Rule number 4, look for pieces which will enhance your wardrobe no matter what the season. Good quality sustainable leather accessories, whether a bag, a belt or shoes, are always a good idea. Belts in particular will finish an outfit. Whether black leather with silver hardware or brown suede with gold or silver hardware, belts are like a piece of jewellery on simple black trousers or jeans. High street hero Massimo Dutti offers a great selection of leather belts so if you purchase at a reduced price, it’s a win win.

Perhaps you feel that you’re missing a decent leather bag, in which case, the winter sale should be your go to. Opt for simplicity in terms of design, avoiding big logos or hardware. A contemporary classic leather bag in a neutral colour, particularly a crossbody, will go with everything and you will love it for longer. Brands Arket and COS and Irish brands Landa and Sómas offer beautifully designed leather bags at great price points.

You’ll never regret buying good quality cashmere in a sale. Whether a fine knit cardigan or a chunky cashmere poloneck, opt for classic colours such as navy, grey, taupe or black. If you look after your cashmere, it will stand the test of time. Layer it in the winter or wear it over your shoulders in the summer on a chilly evening. Irish brands like Monaghans Cashmere, WearWithCashmere or Lucy Nagle offer luxurious colours in a range of styles.

Finally, rule number five applies all year round and is not just a tip for the Christmas sales. Buy less and buy better for a wardrobe of quality pieces that you will always appreciate and wear over and over again.
