Spring Summer 2026 Trends

Colour and 1970s nostalgia dominate this season’s trends for Spring Summer

When it comes to fashion trends, you may be aware of the past few years’ obsession with ‘quiet luxury’. Essentially, this describes wearing expensive layers of designer clothes all in the same neutral tones. For those of you that find this fashion extremely dull, you’ll be glad to hear that this obsession is officially over.

This season is loud and proud of both colour and individualism, the polar opposite of ‘quiet luxury’. Fashion is finally taking itself less seriously and designers are bringing back the joy. Perhaps they realised that in times of global uncertainty, frivolous fashion offers us a much needed escape. There are lots of reassuring references to the 1970s and ‘80s, particularly in accessories. This is where I recommend investing this season. They are big, they are bold and high on glamour! My guess is that you probably already own some of the key pieces from ‘back in the day’.

For example, sunglasses are oversized, circular and straight out of Charlie’s Angels dressing room trailer. All the designer brands are adopting this shape but it could just as easily be found on the high street or even better, in a number of vintage shops or online on sites like e-bay. One piece of jewellery you’re bound to already own, is a brooch. The return of the brooch is unexpected but wonderfully decorative in a nostalgic way. Don’t forget, the bigger the better. Use them to re-invent jackets by pinning one lapel over the other. Fix to scarves or update your sweaters by gathering and pinning a brooch at the waist on one side, instantly enhancing your silhouette.

Speaking of silhouettes, they continue to be baggy, particularly in terms of blazers and trousers. However, you will see more fitted jacket styles, some cropped and others with peplums. Although the barrel jean is as popular as ever, the return of the straight leg denim really means that anything goes! This is great news for those of us who don’t wish to lose any more space in our wardrobe. You’ll be glad to hear that gloves are also very in vogue, particularly in leather.  Make sure to go bright, long or short, this could be your chance to introduce one of two most prevalent colours this year.

The first of these colours is cobalt blue. This is a colour that can divide opinion but when used against neutrals like khaki or biscuit beige, it really comes alive. If you’re not 100% sure, introduce it gently in a scarf or shoes…blue suede shoes anyone? The second colour worth noting is a universally flattering bright primary or scarlet red. This colour lifts most skin tones and looks so good when worn with blue denim or navy. Even if you don’t change anything about your current wardrobe, introducing one or other of these colours, will immediately bring you up to date.

The 1970s theme continues with the return of fringing. Added to everything from bags to tops, not to mention to the bottom of skirts and scarves, this is a trend that I think will be shortlived so tread lightly. If you’re lucky enough to own a fringed suede handbag from the last time around, definitely take it out for a swing but avoid spending on new pieces.

If anything, this season is teaching us never to throw things out, particularly if it was good quality in the first place. Everything always comes around again so it’s a case of jumping on that carousel to raise your style game. Enjoy the ride!
