These top ‘transition’ pieces will take us seamlessly from Summer to Autumn

Fashion is finally fun again as we continue to see the “quiet luxury” fatigue giving way to more maximalist palettes, silhouettes and fabrics.

Colour takes centre stage with surprisingly complementary combinations whilst fabrics and textures are also layered unexpectedly.

The overall fashion movement is ‘anti-algorithm’ as it rebels against the ‘samey samey’ looks seen repeatedly on Instagram influencers. Amen to that. But before diving fully into fall, let’s consider the transitional period and how to adapt our summer wardrobe to it. There is that annual ‘Back to School’ phase, which the fashion calendar recognises as ‘pre-fall’. We’re not quite ready for the chunky knits and big coats, yet there is a definite freshness to the air which requires more than our linens and flip flops, neither of which owe us anything post heatwave!

The best styling secret right now is light layers that can be removed or added at a moment’s notice. So what are the key pieces we need to gently ease our wardrobe into Autumn? Let me start with fine knits and the most versatile right now is the cardigan. It can be tied around shoulders or worn on the shoulders, which is always so chic. I particularly love when you close a v-neck cardigan under a blazer in a bright colour such as red, a colour we’ve seen grow in popularity of late and always flattering. Arket, known for their affordable high quality basics, have a great red cardigan right now.

Speaking of a blazer, this is always a great transitional piece, particularly in a neutral colour. You may even have invested in a tweed or check version last Autumn, well it’s time to get it out again. Blazers look so smart over jeans but why not try it with a skirt for a change? Whether midi or maxi, the skirt is officially back! Please don’t overthink a skirt. As Miuccia Prada says, skirts should be worn like a T-shirt, a simple basic which is surprisingly comfortable. In terms of colour, you can experiment with lighter blush skirts such as pink or blue, particularly if you don’t want those hues against your face. When mixed with burgundys, browns and khakis, these lighter colours can really update your look as they’re both classic and contemporary like the poplin shirt. Shirts both fitted and oversized continue to be a brilliant basic for layering. Tucked in or left out, oversized or fitted, the humble shirt has taken the fashion world by storm, thanks to Chanel’s Charvet design and subsequent takeover. I recommend Uniqlo’s collaboration with Jonathan Anderson, Dior’s Creative Director. His shirts for Uniqlo in a range of colours are an amazing entry price point to this Irishman’s unlimited talent.

What about the shoes? Footwear is often the sticking point whilst trying to dress well in the morning. The loafer is a smarter and very comfortable alternative to a trainer. I love a loafer in a good quality suede or leather, styled with a skirt and worn with socks preferably, opaque tights will also do. Consider a bright sock to the ankle or mid calf, it’s amazing how they can add interest and colour. Check out AndOtherStories or Avoca, both stores have a wonderful selection of fashionably adorned socks.

Lastly, a few well chosen accessories will always finish an outfit. Sunglasses just have a way of adding glamour and designer pairs can be sourced cheaply second hand in vintage shops or on online. In terms of a bag, go with an over the shoulder bag (crossovers are apparently considered fuddy duddy now, who knew?) in canvas or leather. Parfois and Irish brand Landa bags have a great offering at reasonable price points. And of course the scarf, to add polish and poise. Choose a silk or satin option in a print that will go with as much as possible or pick up on the colours in your outfit. For cost per wear and enduring style, a scarf is unbeatable. Transition complete.
