Turning her home into their new beginning

How Ruth used the value in her home to help her son find his.

Case Study Spry Finance Ruth

A talented singer and musician in her early seventies, Ruth (not her real name*) lives in South County Dublin in a house she moved into less than a year ago. Ruth’s the first to admit that she’s been very fortunate. Years of being supported by a large shareholding in a successful business means she’s had the freedom to follow her lifelong passion for music and enjoy a great lifestyle too.

Now Ruth wants to pass that good fortune on. Her son and his family currently live with her. They’re not in a position to buy a place themselves, so Ruth decided to look into how she might unlock the value in her home to help them onto the property ladder.

With substantial value tied up in her home, Ruth saw an opportunity to release some funds to help her son. She reached out to Paul Merriman of AskPaul.ie, who connected her with Spry Finance, and that’s where her journey began.

Right from the start Ruth appreciated the no-pressure, straight-talking approach. A fan of ‘hard copy’, she loved having a clear and simple, jargon-free brochure she could flick through at her own pace.

As part of the process, Spry advised Ruth to get independent legal advice – which she did – and to talk things through with her family. With just one child, she says she was lucky not to need a big family conference to get everyone’s input. By January 2025, she’d drawn down the agreed sum and kicked off the next chapter, not just for her, but for her whole family.

Ruth’s aware of the option to make repayments to manage the balance of the loan, however, right now, the focus is on finding the perfect home south of Dublin. Thanks to Ruth’s big-hearted decision, her son and his family are closer than ever to having a place to call their own.
